The trip, Marrakech Zagora, is a popular 2 days desert trip for a camel ride and sunset desert tour.
Roaming Camels offers the Marrakech Zagora overnight route as a must do experience for those travelers who do not have a great deal of time but still want a desert experience. This gives you the opportunity to get outside of Marrakech, see the High Atlas Mountains, sleep in tents and ride a camel.
The 2 days desert tour from Marrakech to Zagora will have you travel over the High Atlas Mountains, with the highest mountain pass in Morocco at 2160 m. Stop and admire the view over the vast landscape and see the windy roads and foothills.
Visit the UNESCO World Heritage Site at Ait Ben Haddou Kasbah after the mountains and enjoy a break to climb the monument and visit this ancient village. See if you can recognize the parts that were used as a backdrop in Games of Thrones filming.
Then you will gaze out on the stunning views of Draa Valley and its palm groves, and marvel at the vast and changing landscape. Pass shepherds and Berber villages, farms and riverbeds.
Once you arrive in the oasis around Zagora you will have a final stop for water before heading out to meet your camels. Enjoy an ambling trek with the camels into the nearby camp where you will spend the night under the stars. Enjoy dinner prepared for you in camp and the sound of the native drum beat around the fire before bed.
Please keep in mind that Zagora is a different kind of desert than you might find at Merzouga. It does not have the large red dunes that you might associate from photos of the Sahara. The sand dunes are there, but they are smaller and farther apart with a rocky terrain in the mix. What is the same however, is the lifestyle, the culture, the barren flat lands that were crossed for thousands of years en route from the desert up to Marrakech for trading.
If you do want to go deeper into the dunes, we are happy to offer a trip for 2 nights with accommodation in Zagora the first night and then a chance to travel deep into the dunes the next day towards M’Hamid for an overnight stay there.
If you find yourself in Marrakech and you are a little short of time, don’t worry. We can take you to the desert that is closer to Marrakech, just south in fact.
With pick up from your riad in Marrakech in the early morning, you will find yourself up and over the High Atlas Mountains and sleeping in nomad camp by sundown.
Hire us with a private car and driver for your small group and you can enjoy the drive in peace. Stop in at Ait Ben Haddou on your return for a look around an amazing ancient kasbah as well.
