For a truly amazing experience during your Moroccan vacation, consider taking a day trip from Marrakech to Imlil. This lovely excursion to the High Atlas mountains is adventurous, yet relaxing. It’s also a wonderful way to get to know the Berber people.
Day Trip From Marrakech to Imlil
The city of Marrakech is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Morocco. This vibrant and busy city offers many things to do and see, including the wonderful Medina, where there is almost always something exciting going on. However, the temperatures in Marrakech, especially from May to September, can feel unbearably hot at times. This is especially true for travelers who aren’t accustomed to it. Fortunately, there are several day excursions from Marrakech available. These are perfect for travelers who wish to explore the land outside of the city. And one of the most popular excursions is to take a day trip from Marrakech to Imlil.
The Picturesque Mountain Village of Imlil
The lovely village of Imlil is considered to be the base for trekking higher into the High Atlas Mountains. Picturesque and serene, this peaceful village has a population of around 5000 in the summer, and considerably less than that in the winter.
When you take one of our tours, you will be met in Imlil by a local guide who will take you on a wonderful hike into the Ourika Valley. You will enjoy amazing views of Mount Toubkal, the highest mountain in Morocco. The valley itself is a wonder, as well, with a lovely lazy river and the rich deep green of Walnut trees all around.
What to Do in Imlil, Morocco
For those who wish to spend more than a day in the mountains, Imlil does offer a number of accommodations, from inexpensive to upscale. The food there is basic, fresh, and absolutely delicious – and with our day tour to Imlil, lunch is included.
Advanced hikers enjoy the challenge of hiking to the top of Mount Toubkal. Keep in mind, though, that this is a challenging two-day hike. It is not ideal for those who are in less-than-great shape.
A hike through the Ourika Valley to the Berber village of Aroumd is much gentler. However, if you prefer not to hike, mules are also available upon request.
Your day trip to Imlil is also a great opportunity to find some lovely handcrafted Berber treasures. Small stands along the road feature crafts, carpets, pottery, and other wonderful hand-crafted items. So be sure you take a little money for souvenirs!
Whether you take a day trip from Marrakech to Imlil with us or someone else, I truly hope you will take the opportunity to find your way to the High Atlas Mountains.
